Regard:
The Voilé journal.

About Regard: We are endlessly inspired by the people who surround us. Some you may know from their public lives, others are close family and friends. One thing does unite them all. They are experience-seeking people who value style over trends and see the world in their own unique way. Some will join us for special collaborations, others will be featured right here in our magazine, Regard. We are thrilled to have them alongside us on this journey.

Edition 2:
A home of one’s own.

Genevieve in the
home she calls
her own.

In 1929 Virginia Woolf famously argued that “a woman needs a room of her own”. She would no doubt be delighted to learn that women today are buying their own homes in record numbers. In 2015 in Canada, 25% of homebuyers were single women (vs 10% single men) and many speculate that the trend isn’t slowing down. In this edition of Regard we meet Geneviève Trepanier and get a tour of the home she calls her own.

The big leap.

“I have to say that buying my first property alone was a milestone (and a stressful one
to be perfectly honest). And even if buying is becoming more common, given the evolution of the market my friends and acquaintances are buying as couples to help absorb the financial stress.”

“I also had a great resource in my BFF, Véronique, who asked me all the right questions and helped me make the right choice for me. So at 31 years old, I found a condo with the cachet I wanted, not too far from a metro, on The Plateau (ah yes). It needed work and saw how I could give it the love required pretty easily. In the long term as well, because it’s an ongoing project.”

The sisterhood.

“To be totally transparent, I feel a mix of pride and discomfort when I mention owning my own place to guys I’m seeing. Probably mostly out of fear of coming across as too grown up or making them feel like they aren’t on top of things. Even though it’s a personal choice, buying needn’t be the ultimate goal for everyone, but I do sometimes think it can be intimidating.”

A small caveat.

Family, funds
and fix-its.

“As for family, I have no doubt my parents were stressed but they never showed it or I never felt it. We had many discussions where, without going into the numbers, I explained how I could reorganize my spending and monthly savings to pay a mortgage, down payment and the welcome tax. I think my dad was really eager to come over and help me out more than anything.”
